Black farmers across the country, experience the devastating impact of displacement.

Updated: 1 day ago

Update: Ms. Millie, a local farmer and small business owner in Davie, Florida, no longer has her farm. The town council voted in favor of a new housing development on the land where she farmed, located at the corner of Flamingo Road and Orange Drive. This development, with a density of 2.3 houses per acre, displaced Ms. Millie and destroyed her livelihood.

Ms. Millie, like many other Black farmers across the country, experienced the devastating impact of displacement. Systemic barriers, including limited access to land continue to jeopardize the existence of Black-owned farms.

What We Can Learn From Miss Millie's Story:

  • Support Local Farmers: Continue to purchase produce directly from local farmers at farmers' markets, farm stands, and through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs.

  • Advocate for Change: Support policies that protect farmland and promote the sustainability of local agriculture.

  • Raise Awareness: Share stories like Ms. Millie's to educate others about the challenges facing local farmers.

Ms. Millie's story serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to protect and support our local farmers. We must advocate for policies that safeguard farmland, provide equitable access to resources, and address the historical injustices that have disproportionately impacted Black farmers.
